The VehTrak Server applications are built to communicate over an IP network and are designed to allow distribution. For example, the Data Processing Service, Web Interface (Servlet), and Web Service could all be run on separate machines. Furthermore, the MapPoint Web Service is hosted by Microsoft on one of their servers somewhere in the world. If you write applications to extend or customize VehTrak, your application can run on the same machine as VehTrak or on a machine on the other side of the world.

In a typical scenario, all of the VehTrak applications are run on a single machine on an enterprise's intranet behind a firewall. The only hole to be opened on the firewall is a single UDP port to allow the raw location data to be passed through for processing.
